Ahh, Greece. This glorious sun-soaked destination takes pride of place on top of so many holidaymakers’ wish-lists, and it’s not hard to see why. From the fascinating heritage and bustling vibe of Athens, to the glittering golden sands and pristine shores of the Greek islands, there are plenty of reasons to visit.
On the mainland, Athens has star appeal with its centuries-old sights and crumbling ruins. The city is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, one of which is the famous Acropolis of Athens – a magnificent pillared citadel positioned high above the city on a rocky outcrop – and the second is the medieval Daphni Monastery. These sights are pretty soul-stirring, and you’ll find plenty more scattered across the city, including Roman ruins and Byzantine monuments.
Out on the coast of mainland Greece you’ll find lovely resorts like Halkidiki and Parga, which offer a cracking base from which to explore the rest of the country, not to mention some stunning beaches and superb hotels.
However, most holidays to Greece are associated with its beautiful islands. The big names are Crete, Corfu, Rhodes, Zante and Kos, which offer a wonderfully diverse holiday experience that appeals to families, couples and party-goers in equal measure. Other popular yet slightly lesser-known islands include the beautiful isle of Santorini, a volcanic stunner with dramatic views and villages perched high on the clifftops. Kefalonia is another fabulous spot, which is prized for its knock-out scenery and bubbly towns.
With over 13 million tourists coming to Greece every year, it’s clear that this beautiful corner of the world is certainly doing something right. Whether you’re after a scintillating beach break or a historical voyage through time, there is so much to love about Greece. Isn’t it time you went Greek this summer?
