From the Black Ball Hilton we headed down the beautifully scenic west coast towards the Franz Joseph and Fox Glaciers, not far outside of Franz Joseph we stopped about 1km off the main road to use the toilet. We’d bairly got out the car when we were approached by a couple who asked us if we wanted to do a helicopter flight, pretty random but seemed they needed 2 more to make up the numbers.
Our apprehension and the helicopter drivers need for 2 more passengers meant we got a pretty bargainess flight, NZ$140 each compared to the others NZ$280! Having not set to go on a helicopter ride as this seems a little extravagant for backpackers we we’re blown away by the 35 minute ride. We hovered around Mt Cook and swept up and down past the incredible Franz Joseph Glacier. Amazing and highly recommended. Pictures below:
Trying to travel with the ethos of a backpacker, no matter of budget, whether I'm across the other side of the world or over the road.
