Hi Natalie,

Situation in Solo is similar with Yogyakarta. You are totally right that the tourist crouds are not as bad as Yogyakarta. Solo is more quite and traditional.

AirAsia can be your option to fly low cost. AisAsia flies from Kuala Lumpur to Solo directly.

In Solo you can visit the Sultan Palace and Pasar Klewer (traditional batik market).
Food you have to eat : Nasi Liwet and Serabi Solo.

Has anyone ever backpacked to Solo (also known as Sala and Surakarta)? It is also on Java, like Yogyakarta. It sounds like Solo is similar to Yogykarta (culture, food, art, etc.) but the tourist crouds of Yogyakarta are not found in Solo.

Been to Solo? Going to Solo? Know someone who has been?

My husband and I leave on September 30th for Rome, my brother is getting married in Italy during October. Then Justin and I are going to backpack and budget travel around to various countries for a year or so. www.nomadbackpackers.com

We would love advice, encouragement, ideas, opinions, anything!

Backpacking in Yogyakarta, Indonesia could be really fun too.The food there are amazingly delicious. The night food stall there started at 9pm. There sell lots of their local food, mee bandung is nice. I also like the local fruits especially the durian. I stayed in Meliya Pourasani hotel, the service there is marvellous and the price is not expensive. A backpacker should dp some preparation before the journey, you could go to www.a4trip.com to find some informations on this places. Besides, I also bought its guidebook. The guidebook is handy and simply what a good guidebook should be. Hope that it will help you guys too.
