The beautiful Brecon Beacons are steeped in history and are a popular destination all year round for holiday makers seeking all kinds of outdoor activities.  The Brecon Beacons and surrounding areas also makes a fantastic destination for young families as we found in a recent self catering stay.

We stayed in the ‘Glass House ‘ in the small village of Llangorse, which made a perfect base for exploring some stunning scenery and family friendly activities the local area had to offer. The village itself had 2 pubs which is always an important consideration and was a short walk to Llangorse reservoir that offered a host of activities for older children and adults a like.

Below are some of the highlights.

Brecon Beacons Mountain railway

One Of The Most Popular Railways In Wales . Take a vintage steam locomotive through beautiful scenery into the Brecon Beacons. Take your own picnic thouigh, the sandwiches at the cafe were 90% mayo and salt. The train runs from the amusingly named Pant Station up to Pontsticill you can alight from the train and visit the Cafe, admire the view across the water to the peaks of the Brecon Beacons, and go for a ramble alongside the reservoir.  There is a play area here for children.

Hay-on-wye

Everyone knows Hay-on-wye, located on the border between England and Wales it is world renound for its number of secondhand book shops, many of which have good children’s sections with one shop entirely dedicated to children’s books.

Llangorse resevoir

The largest natural lake in South Wales, a pleasant place to feed ducks and if the weathers right go sailing and boating

Cantref Adventure Farm

Spectacularly located farm with slides, including down ‘Europe’s longest sledge ride’, tractor rides, soft play cafe  and my personal highlight, a daily pig race.
